Born in Enid,OK Mark T. Holtzapple 2006 Walston Chubb Award for Innovation Chemical engineering professor Mark T. Holtzapple at Texas A&M University is known for his creativity, especially in the realm of new technologies. His research on super-efficient engines and converting biomass to cleaner-burning fuels holds great promise. The MixAlco process he developed converts everything from garbage to sewage sludge to sorghum and other crops into mixed alcohols that can be used as fuel. His StarRotor engine, now under development, could be as much as 60 percent efficient—two to four times more efficient than today's conventional internal combustion engines. And it will be able to run on a variety of fuels, such as alcohol, diesel or even olive oil. Holtzapple received his B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. After serving in the U.S. Army, he came to Texas A&M as an assistant professor in 1986. He is now a full professor, with 26 issued patents and numerous pending patents. In addition to engines and renewable energy resources, his research interests include space life support, air conditioning/refrigeration, water desalination and food processing. Holtzapple has received the Texas A&M Ingenuity Award and the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the American Chemical Society.

http://www.canadianbusiness.co...ns-oil-company-board Former North Dakota Gov. Ed Schafer has joined the board of Continental Resources Inc. (RIVALING THE PRODUCTION LEVELS OF OPEC)The state's largest oil producer, months after he led an unsuccessful public campaign to prod the Legislature into cutting oil tax rates. Schafer, a Republican who was governor from 1992 through 2000 and served as U.S. agriculture secretary in 2008, had begun a statewide tour pushing for lower oil taxes began last January, supported by Continental and other oil companies. As part of his director's compensation, Schafer is receiving 11,945 shares of Continental stock over four years. The shares would be worth more than $770,000 based on Monday's stock price of about $65 a share. Schafer and Harold Hamm, the chairman and chief executive of Enid, Okla.-based Continental, said there was no relationship between Schafer's advocacy of overhauling North Dakota's oil tax structure and the decision to put him on the company's board.

Rest in peace Sam Rivers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Rivers THIS IS A CULTURAL 7.0 EARTHQUAKE. A LEGEND OF JAZZ MUSIC WAS BORN IN ENID. In 1959 Rivers began performing with 13-year-old drummer Tony Williams, who later went on to have an impressive career. Rivers was briefly a member of the Miles Davis's quintet in 1964, partly at Williams's recommendation. This quintet was recorded on a single album, Miles in Tokyo. Unfortunately, Rivers' playing style was too free to be compatible with Davis's music at this point, and he was soon replaced by Wayne Shorter. Rivers was signed by Blue Note Records, for whom he recorded four albums as leader and made several sideman appearances. Among noted sidemen on his own Blue Note Records were Jaki Byard who appears on Fuchsia Swing Song, Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard. He appeared on Blue Note recordings of Tony Williams, Andrew Hill and Larry Young. http://indianapublicmedia.org/...-sam-rivers-in-1964/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...59Co&feature=related
TP: You said it takes more than a minute to become proficient traditional musician, so I'd like to address that in the next segment of the show. In the biographies, the encyclopedias of jazz, your birthdate is listed as 1930, but in reality it's in 1923, and that makes sense in terms of the accomplishments of your career. You're in the line of the great jazz musicians born in Oklahoma -- Enid, Oklahoma. Sam Rivers: yeah, but . . . TP: You didn't spend much time there? Sam Rivers : No. Just my mother and father were on tour. I was born on the road. My father was a singer in the Silvertone Quartet, and my mother was the accompanist. They were living in Chicago at the time, and I was born in Enid while they were on tour. Touring in the South at that time was fairly easy for them, because there were always more churches there than bars. They were both college graduates. My father graduated from Fisk University and my mother from Howard University. TP: Were they both music majors? Sam Rivers : My father was a music major. My mother majored in Sociology, and she played piano. My grandfather was also a musician, and his two sisters. They transcribed songs from the slaves, and he wrote books about the composition of the music, and he did some original music of his own hymnals. His name was the Reverend Marshall Taylor. He was Bishop in the Methodist Church in Cincinnati or somewhere like that. He published his own music like I'm doing decades later. The publishing company is still in the family, but I'm not going to use it at this time until I get sort of situated. It's nice to say "established in 1881" or something like that.
| |||

Fracking movie maker gets arrested for filming a fracking science study meeting !! This is probably not the way for the U.S. to regain our recent huge losses on the Press Freedom Index. Josh Fox, director of the Oscar-nominated (and Emmy-winning) documentary Gasland, was arrested this morning for trying to film a committee meeting about fracking. The House Science Committee had convened to discuss the EPA’s findings about possible water contamination from fracking in an Ohio town, but evidently they weren’t interested in being recorded. An ABC News crew was turned away from the hearing, and Fox was ejected from the premises and arrested for “unlawful entry.” Apparently the issue is that Fox doesn’t have appropriate press credentials, although if ABC News also doesn’t have them, one wonders what “appropriate press credentials” look like. Democratic Rep. Brad Miller wanted to toss out all the press credential hoop-jumping, and moved that “the fella who wanted to film for HBO be allowed to film this hearing and that ABC be allowed to film this hearing and all God’s children be allowed to film this hearing until the room is too full for us to conduct our business.” Which is adorable and makes me want to move to North Carolina’s 13th so I can vote for him. But the Republicans shot that down and recessed the hearing, and Fox was led out in handcuffs. He should have told them he was Fox news. Update: Fox has released a statement: I was arrested today for exercising my First Amendment rights to freedom of the press on Capitol Hill. I was not expecting to be arrested for practicing journalism. Today’s hearing in the House Energy and Environment subcommittee was called to examine EPAs findings that hydraulic fracturing fluids had contaminated groundwater in the town of Pavillion, Wyoming. I have a long history with the town of Pavillion and its residents who have maintained since 2008 that fracking has contaminated their water supply. I featured the stories of residents John Fenton, Louis Meeks and Jeff Locker in GASLAND and I have continued to document the catastrophic water contamination in Pavillion for the upcoming sequel GASLAND 2. It would seem that the Republican leadership was using this hearing to attack the three year Region 8 EPA investigation involving hundreds of samples and extensive water testing which ruled that Pavillion’s groundwater was a health hazard, contaminated by benzene at 50x the safe level and numerous other contaminants associated with gas drilling. Most importantly, EPA stated in this case that fracking was the likely cause. As a filmmaker and journalist I have covered hundreds of public hearings, including Congressional hearings. It is my understanding that public speech is allowed to be filmed. Congress should be no exception. No one on Capitol Hill should regard themselves exempt from the Constitution. The First Amendment to the Constitution states explicitly “Congress shall make no law…that infringes on the Freedom of the Press”. Which means that no subcommittee rule or regulation should prohibit a respectful journalist or citizen from recording a public hearing. This was an act of civil disobedience, yes done in an impromptu fashion, but at the moment when they told me to turn off the cameras, I could not. I know my rights and I felt it was imperative to exercise them. When I was led out of the hearing room in handcuffs, John Boehner’s pledge of transparency in congress was taken out with me. The people of Pavillion deserve better. The thousands across the US who have documented cases of water contamination in fracking areas deserve their own hearing on Capitol hill. They deserve the chance to testify in before Congress. The truth that fracking contaminates groundwater is out, and no amount of intimidation tactics –either outright challenges to science or the arrest of journalists –will put the genie back in the bottle. Such a brazen attempt to discredit and silence the EPA, the citizens of Pavillion and documentary filmmaking will ultimately fail and it is an affront to the health and integrity of Americans. Lastly, in defense of my profession, I will state that many many Americans get their news from independent documentaries. The hill should immediately move to make hearings and meetings accessible to independent journalists and not further obstruct the truth from being reported in the vivid and in depth manner that is only achievable through long form documentary filmmaking. I will be thinking on this event further and will post further thoughts and developments. I have been charged with “unlawful entry” and my court date is February 15. Jess Zimmerman is the editor of Grist List.
