What does the Bible state about debt? Romans 13:8 Keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor [who practices loving others] has fulfilled the Law [relating to one's fellowmen, meeting all its requirements]. Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Luke 8:14 And as for what fell among the thorns, these are [the people] who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked and suffocated with the anxieties and cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not ripen (come to maturity and perfection). Proverbs 22:7 The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender. Luke 14:28–30 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying 'This man began to build and was not able to finish'? Proverbs 28:20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished. Psalms 109:11 Let the creditor and extortioner seize all that he has; and let strangers (barbarians and foreigners) plunder the fruits of h Proverbs 17:18 A man void of good sense gives a pledge and becomes security for another in the presence of his neighbor. Proverbs 23:4–5 Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven. Credit card debt makes a slave out of the card holder. We are to rely on God, not credit cards. We are to be wise with our finances and live within our means. Outside of purchasing a home, there really should not be a need for continuous debt to supply ourselves with "things" beyond necessity. It is an issue of pride and worldliness today that believers seek to go in debt for things and have things they cannot truly afford. The money they have wasted on interest and in obtaining excess for themselves could have gone to help those in need, or for a savings for hard times. I have seen believers borrow money to pay off a debt, and use the money they borrowed to go on a vacation. I have seen believers max out their credit cards and be asking for money for lunch at work, but confess at church that God has blessed them with their material possessions. Credit card debt is something that Christians should keep themselves away from. Philippians 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Matthew 6:31 Therefore do not worry and be anxious, saying, What are we going to have to eat? or, What are we going to have to drink? or, What are we going to have to wear? Luke 12:26-31 If then you are not able to do such a little thing as that, why are you anxious and troubled with cares about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies , how they grow. They neither [wearily] toil nor spin nor weave; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory (his splendor and magnificence) was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today, and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you, O you [people] of little faith? 29 And you, do not seek [by meditating and reasoning to inquire into] what you are to eat and what you are to drink; nor be of anxious (troubled) mind [unsettled, excited, worried, and in suspense]; 30 For all the pagan world is [greedily] seeking these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Only aim at and strive for and seek His kingdom, and all these things shall be supplied to you also. Love does no wrong to one's neighbor [it never hurts anybody]. Therefore love meets all the requirements and is the fulfilling of the Law. -Romans 13:10

An Inconvenient Truth, You won't get much agreement except with the teaching of Christ and the confirmation of the Holy Spirit, but then that is the agreement that counts. (Now it's time for all those "special" circumstances to be posted that creates "immunity" for those that really don't believe you should remain "free" of worldly incumberings, but remarkably, Jesus didn't believe that way. He believed we should remain completely and totally free from enslavement to the world. An inconvenient truth. Thanks for the post. 1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

I personally only have one credit card and it only has an $800 limit. I use it only for emergencies or when I have to use it to rent a car or stay at a hotel room. I certainly am not indebt to be "rich". I of course am in debt for my home but that is something that I live in everyday and I am constantly improving and will be worth something if I have to sell it. I think the main point in the Bible is to not owe a brother or someone in your church. I would never borrow money from another Witness. I have however given money to my brothers and sisters who are Witnesses without wanting it back so they dont owe me. Also the other point in the Bible is to not get greedy and covet what we cant afford. There are so many scriptures that you posted above about how riches dont give us salvation. However on the flip side of the coin we should not judge a brother or sister in our faith that does have a lot of money. If they got rich by working hard and investing wisely then we should mind our own business and not say that they dont have the right to those riches that they worked for. There is nothing wrong with working hard and making money, however remember to keep time for serving God and doing His will. The human heart feels things the eyes cannot see, and knows what the mind cannot understand. Robert Valett

Saving an emergency fund and having a debit card easily replaces any belief in the 'necessity' for having a credit card. None of the Scriptures posted state that being rich is a sin, only having the motivation of becoming hastily rich is futile for the unhealthy desire to achieve and maintain wealth can be not only a hindrance to service to God, it can be an elusive security. Being rich isn't a sin, the unhealthy desire to be rich is, and having a heart that is stingy, overindulgent and ungenerous is a sin. Love does no wrong to one's neighbor [it never hurts anybody]. Therefore love meets all the requirements and is the fulfilling of the Law. -Romans 13:10

No one should have credit card debt. They are the bane of western civilization. If you can't afford to pay for it, don't buy it. The credit card companies are evil and will suck you in like a... a thing that gets sucked in easily. Just say no!

This was such a great answer, I'm just posting so that it won't get buried in the sands of time and dead threads.
