I don't know how. But, it seems Jourdan had a sense of humor after all he had been through. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/si...ntion-151653952.html

Probly thought Jourdan would drop everything and get right on back down to Tennessee. Probly figured he missed being shot at now and then.

That ranks up there with Celtic going on about Lena Horne should've been glad she just had to live under Jim Crow and not as some African king's concubine.

Excellent letter, but I am dubious of its authenticity. I hope it's the real deal. I stand corrected. It appears that the letter was published in this book: "THE FREEDMEN'S BOOK. By L. MARIA CHILD. O dark, sad millions,—patiently and dumb Waiting for God,—your hour, at last, has come, And Freedom's song Breaks the long silence of your night of wrong. John G. Whittier. BOSTON: TICKNOR AND FIELDS. 1865. [ii] Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by L. MARIA CHILD, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts"This message has been edited. Last edited by: RightsaidFred,

I suppose that once they were freed the slaves were technically illegal aliens since they had not previously held citizenship. Can I get two "mullets up" on that legal theory, JB?

Surely there will be a day of reckoning for those who defraud the laborer of his hire. I will remember this since we're in a time when supposed free people suffer this kind of action from their employers! It amazes me that a recently freed man that had worked as a slave was able to sit down and write a letter of such beauty. The words just flowed. It reminded me of some of the letters from former farmboys that were writing home during the Civil War. Poetry!

That's exactly the same thing I thought. I wondered if perhaps the attorney was able to help him write the letter, because it is my understanding that it was illegal to teach slaves to read or write. I am just amazed at Jourdan's humor in the face of the Master's actions. Amazed.

GBG, In the book that it was published in there is a note stating "Written as dictated". I assume that an attorney actually penned the letter. The mention of accrued interest for past wages due is what threw me off. I can't imagine that a former slave would understand that concept. I would guess that he had some coaching regarding the back pay issue. This message has been edited. Last edited by: RightsaidFred,

The fourteenth amendment to the Constitution granted citizenship to the slaves although there was a period that the freedmen were not legally citizens. http://americanhistory.about.c...mendment-Summary.htm

The JBs of the late 1860s should have sprung into action and booted the illegals outta town while they had the chance. Look at all of the problems that there inaction has caused... by-God.

You are slipping into the alinsky quagmire of trying to win arguments by : Alinsky's Rule 12: Destroy the Individual RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.) A person tends to learn more truth from a mirror than from his own words. Try it.

That's a heck of a good approach, but I am not engaged in an argument of any sort. I am simply baiting JB for my own amusement.
I would amend that to say "A person tends to learn more from my own words". I'm giving you a free education here SoT. All you have to do is absorb the knowledge that I'm offering.

All you have to do is absorb the knowledge that I'm offering.[/QUOTE] Just a thought Fred but the obvious is that you will learn nothing from your own words. A common condition of those with a more liberal bent than I commonly assign to you. You obviously have a rudimentary knowledge of business and are by your own account actively involved in commerce (something lacking in liberal mentalities) so I offer you merely a friendly constructive comment if I may say so. As far as learning from you, move a little toward the center and forget about the alinskyisms that you may have picked by association on this forum and you will find a willing student in myself. Keep repeating the chants and rhetoric of the moaists and alinsky's and there's nothing I choose to learn there. I am a believer that one should continue to learn for their entire lives but do not believe one should regress to the things he already has learned that he knows will fail merely to quiet the mindless chatter of those that attempt to drown out anyone with views different than their own (of course not in any way referencing you here). As to baiting JB for your amusement, the plumb seems to settle remarkably close to the line used by the alinsky radicals for other purposes yet the results seem the same. Perhaps you are unknowingly choosing a horse in the race that you believe will be to your benefit after the dust settles but may be surprised that there will be no beneficiaries to the things that have now begun. As far as the "free education" you offer, history is full of such things offered under the guise of "free education" so I must decline your most generous offer to educate me in the things that you already claim to know that you borrowed from someone else that they claimed to know that they borrowed and so on. I'd suggest doing some follow up on the ones that provide you with the things you so generously offer and see if you may have gotten off the path a bit and may be offering something that has little value in the first place. Perhaps there are others here that would take you up on your offer of "free education" and if so I wish you and them the best of luck.

Actually, I've learned a lot from the words of some of the posters on here. I've learned how much they hate those who don't agree with them or their political views, or their agendas. I've learned how much the Left hates whites in general, even though most of those on the Left are caucasian themselves. I guess it's rooted in a deep self-loathing, but their gargantuan egos still think that they and theirs will be exempt from the eventualities they are setting up by pitting all races against whites, and all their other "tear down to rebuild" agendas. I've learned that they love to employ Alinsky's rule #12 and pick on one person mercilessly. When called out on it, they say they were just playing, 'baiting', or give excuses for their cruel behavior...when in fact the reality is they are showing all the symptoms of those who like to torture small animals and gang up on one kid at school until that kid snaps. BUT when and if Alinsky's #12 is dished back at 'em, they whine and cry and call foul and threaten to "go tell" on whoever is serving their own crap back at 'em. No, not all Leftists are that far gone, but the potential is there as the more moderate ones began to become immune to the pack behavior of the leaders.
